Interested people met on 17 January 2010 at the Israel Advocacy Training Institute- Spotlight Iran to learn how to express their opinions.

There was a workshop where participants learned how to sign up for twitter accounts so they could tweet their congressional representatives.

There was another workshop where participants learned which Protestant denominations have bishops, so they would know who in a particular chruch hierarchy to write to to express their opinions.

All participants received the addresses of the Congressional Offices for the 8 Maryland Representatives and two senators; for the three Virginia representatives and two senators; and for the lone Washington, DC Representative so that they could mail their written opinions.

All participants received an excerpt from the New York Times (23 May 2004), written by its Letter Editor, Thomas Feyer, with his feedback to all readers on how he selects letters to be published (or not.)

For $18, they could have at least invited someone representing Iran to provide some input !

Esther and Mordechai are believed to be buried in a tomb in the Iranian city of Hamadan, which is located between Teheran and Iran's western border with Iraq.

Lyda Cohen, wife of the obstetrician, remembers having gone from her home in Teheran to visit the tomb. One had to bow low to go inside its entrance, assuring that a pilgrim entered with an attitude of respect.
She recalled that pilgrims would pray while walking around two large, ornately carved trunks, before they would back out of the tomb. By backing out, the pilgrims avoided showing disrespect to the great personages buried inside.

The burial sites of Mordechai and Esther were said to be in the cellar below, in the exact locations where the two trunks were placed on the floor above, she recalled.

Breskin said pilgrims would fast the day before Purim--the way Esther had fasted before she persuaded King Ahashuerus to save the Jews -- so as to give their petitions and prayers inside the tomb more merit.
Architect Yassi Gabbay, who renovated the tomb 20 years ago before moving to Beverly Hills, said pilgrims used to light candles in an antechamber before entering the main room of the tomb, but said that custom was halted as a result of a fire. Candles were especially dangerous in the main room, he added, because of the pilgrims' custom of draping the ornately carved trunks with cloths as a remembrance of their visit.

"Sometimes there would be so many fabrics left by people," that the fire danger was particularly high, he said.

The architect, who since has won awards from the City of Beverly Hills for his design of an office building at 9025 Wilshire Blvd., and an Oriental Rug Showroom at 8725 Wilshire Blvd., said before the tomb was refurbished it was hidden from view by an apartment building.

He said the Jewish community of Hamadan purchased that apartment building and razed it to clear the way for a courtyard and a synagogue to be added to the tomb complex.

The tomb itself dates back only to the 16th or 17th century, he said, built over the deep pit in which the original burials are believed to have occurred.

Although the small Jewish community of Hamadan has mostly emigrated since the takeover of the Iranian government by Islamic fundamentalists, Gabbay and Cohen both reported that they have been informed that the tomb remains well cared for by the Islamic Revolutionary authorities.
Asked how it happened that Esther's and Mordechai's` tomb should be in Hamadan, rather than in Persepolis, which was the ancient capital of Persia (Iran), Joshua Cohen explained that after King Ahashuerus died, there arose a king who knew not Esther.

Hamadan, which has far cooler temperatures than the desert city of Persepolis, was the summer capital of Persia, so Esther and Mordechai removed themselves from the palace to an exile in the summer resort, where they spent their final years, according to the folklore.

Hamadan literally means "place of knowledge," and people from Hamadan are praised or teased about how smart they are supposed to be,

What Maz said about the photo: This was me in May at the airport in Sharm El Sheykh, Egypt traveling with a broken foot. You will note that the wheel chair is rather small. They only wheel this chair out for special guests, such as yours truly. (Although I did see them wheeling a sleeping infant in one later on. He seemed to fit better than me. Must've been a VVIP.)

Those arguing in favour of an historical reading of Esther, most commonly identify Ahasuerus with Artaxerxes II (ruled 405 - 359 B.C.E.) although in the past it was often assumed that he was Xerxes I (ruled 486 - 465 B.C.E.).

The point, Gould says, is to have a food that represents airiness when the prayer is recited: “May it be Your will…that our sins be as light as lungs.”

While the symbolism of some of the foods may be obvious - apples and honey for a sweet year; pomegranate and beans for profusion - others are included because of word associations between their names in Hebrew or Aramaic, and their related prayers. For example, in Hebrew the date is called tamar. The blessing said over the date at the seder, using the word yitammoo, asks that evildoers be done away with. The root of yitammoo is tam, directly taken from tamar.The blessings over chives and beets make the same request, also based on wordplay. Zucchini symbolizes a public recognition of good deeds and a “ripping up” of bad. (“Kra” in Hebrew means zucchini, but is also the root for “read” and “rip.”) Meat from the head of a cow or sheep represents intelligence or scholarly pursuits.

“The most important factor about the Jewish High Holidays in Iran is that the Jewish holidays most fully celebrated are the ones that coincide with Persian holidays,” writes Dr. Houman Sarshar, author of “Esther's Children: A Portrait of Iranian Jews,” director of publications at The Center for Iranian Jewish Oral History, and a psychotherapist in New York City.Since Rosh Hashanah coincides with an ancient Persian festival (Mehregan), it is celebrated grandly by Persian Jews.

By doing many of the same things during the Jewish holiday as Muslims do during coinciding Muslim holidays, Sarshar writes, “Iranian Jews get to be Jewish and Iranian at the same time.”

She lists the ritual foods that adorn her seder table every Rosh Hashanah, blessed in this order:

Adhami's parents came from Tehran to Los Angeles as students in the 1960s. But her interest in Iranian Jewish culture, she said, grew with the arrival of thousands of refugees fleeing the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Newcomers would come to her parents for guidance in navigating American life. "I was hearing the stories over and over," Adhami said in a recent telephone interview. "And it was always the same themes -- everybody's pain and loss."
Nazarian may have been unable to take her wedding photos with her out of Iran, but she retains recollections of life there.
In addition to her strong memories of Passover, Nazarian remembers a different kind of seder. She wrote and translated from Farsi, the Persian language, the text of a Rosh Hashanah seder, a singularly Iranian Jewish custom.
In addition to apples and honey (for a sweet year), seven symbolic foods -- pomegranates, dates, beets, zucchini, black-eyed peas and the head or tongue of a cow or sheep -- are blessed and eaten, each representing an aspect of health and good fortune.
Nazarian was inspired to create the English-language seder guide for the children of Iranian immigrants raised in America.
"If they cannot read and write Hebrew or Persian," said Nazarian, "they're not going to have a seder. This is our tradition. We have to keep all the holidays."

"Established in 1989, the Persian Cultural Center (PCC), better known to the community as "Kanoon", is a 501(c)(3) non-profit national organization, with no-political or religious affiliation. PCC is based in San Diego and was created to celebrate, share and promote the very rich cultural abundance of its many ethnic groups and their history."

On 4 June, both intensive Persian language classes visited the Soltan Banoo restaurant on Park Blvd for a delicious, relaxing patio lunch.

On 2 Jun, the beginning class learned which food actually goes with the word toot (mulberry) after I brought in some from the Persian market on Convoy. (review with photos; another)
